Leds in biological industrial applications
Tubular fluorescent lamps (TFL) and high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS) are the principal artificial light sources used in agriculture applications. Efficient means to apply light, its uniformity, light quantity and quality were under investigation worldwide. Recent development of photoelectronics has enabled the commercialization of super bright light-emitting diodes (LEDs), thus making the possibility of using LEDs in plant production as well as illumination possible. LEDs have many advantages over conventional light sources including high energy-conversion efficiency, utilizing DC power, compact and solid, longer life, wavelength specific, light intensity/quality adjustable and low thermal energy output, thus making it a promising light source for plant growth in a confined environment such as a plant tissue culture room or growth chamber. LED is very suitable for applications required specific wavelength. NASA is the first organization using LEDs in the mission to Mars. At present, their research has expanded the applications of LEDs to replace LASER in photodynamic therapy for cancer treatments. In the field of Dermatology, LED is the low intensity light source used as alternative in photo rejuvenation following LASER and pulse light. Besides skin treatment, LED can be used in other light therapies for the treatments of wound healing, joint/tissue inflammation, jaundiced newborns, circadian rhythm disorders, myocardial infarction, stroke, stress reduction, rhinitis, herpes and seasonal affective disorder etc. The objective of this study was to review the means of applying LEDs in bio-industry.
